Strong earthquake in Japan, silicon wafers, MLCC, and multiple semiconductor factories shut down for inspection, with estimated controllable impact

Most factories have conducted preliminary inspections and found that the machines have not suffered serious damage, indicating that the impact is controllable.

According to a survey conducted by TrendForce Consulting, the affected area of the strong earthquake in the Neden area of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, including MLCC plant TAIYO YUDEN, silicon wafer plant Shin Etsu, GlobalWafers, semiconductor plant Toshiba, and TPSCo, jointly operated by Tower and Nuvoton, are all located in the earthquake zone. Due to the current downward cycle of semiconductors and the fact that the timing has entered the off-season, some components are still in stock, and most factories are located at seismic levels 4 to 5, all of which are within the scope of factory seismic design. At present, TrendForce Consulting has conducted an investigation and found that most factories have not suffered serious damage to their machines during initial inspections, indicating that the impact is controllable.

In terms of silicon wafer plants, Shin Etsu and GlobalWafers are both undergoing shutdown inspections at the Niigata plant. Crystal Growth is the most taboo factor in the Raw Wafer process due to seismic shaking, but the Shin Etsu Chang Crystal plant is mostly located in the Fukushima area, and the impact of this earthquake is limited. SUMCO was not affected.

In terms of semiconductor factories, Toshiba Kaga's factory is located in the southwest of Ishikawa Prefecture, with one six inch and one eight inch factory each, and a twelve inch factory expected to be completed in the first half of 2024; And TPSCo, a joint venture between Tower and Nuvoton (formerly Panasonic), has three factories located in Uozu, Tonami, and Arai, all of which are currently undergoing shutdown inspections. USJC (UMC's acquisition of Sanchong Fujitsu plant in 2019) was not affected.

In terms of MLCC, TAIYO YUDEN: The Niigata plant area is a brand new factory that can withstand earthquakes up to level seven, and the equipment is currently not affected. Murata (only producing MLCC) and TDK's MLCC plant areas have seismic intensity below level 4 and have not been significantly affected. However, Murata has three factories (not producing MLCC) located in areas with a seismic intensity of 5+, namely Komatsu, Kanazawa, and Toyama. Due to the shutdown of the factories during the New Year holiday, it is currently known that personnel have gone to inspect the damage.
