According to Indian media recently, Gurujee Kumaran Swami, vice chairman of SRAM&MRAM Group headquartered in the United Kingdom, announced at the secret meeting in Orissa (MIO) in 2022 that the group would invest 2 trillion rupees (about 172.3 billion yuan) in Orissa to set up a semiconductor factory in the state.

According to the report, Debadutta Singh Deo, head of Swami and the company's subsidiary in Orissa, said that the group would invest 300 billion rupees (25.86 billion yuan) in the first phase. SRAM&MRAM Group said that the semiconductor manufacturing sector will be launched within three months after obtaining the permission from all government departments.

At the same time, Orissa government obtained a large number of investment commitments from foreign manufacturers at the MIO secret meeting, and signed a number of memorandums of understanding in the electronic and IT fields, including Intel, GlobalFoundries, IBM, Oracle, Jupiter Solar, Deloitte, HappiestMinds, AdaniGroup, E and Aaron Capital.

It is reported that India has a huge integrated circuit application market. According to the data of Indian Electronics and Semiconductors Association (IESA), the value of India's semiconductor component market is expected to reach 32.35 billion US dollars by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 10.1% from 2018 to 2025. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, previously said that it would reach US $64 billion by 2026.

New Semiconductor Factory in India

As one of the largest electronic markets in the world, India is actively developing the semiconductor industry in recent years, and has attracted many foreign investors to open semiconductor factories. In addition to the SRAM&MRAM Group in the UK, it also includes the major manufacturers of Apple, Hon Hai, Gaota Semiconductor, and the Singapore consortium IGSS Ventures.

The latest news is that if India approves in time, the first semiconductor manufacturing wafer factory in India invested by ISMC, an international consortium, in Karnataka, southern India, is expected to start construction in a few months.

It is reported that ISMC is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Next Orbit Ventures and Gaota Semiconductor (acquired by Intel). The total investment of the wafer factory is US $3 billion, and the products are mainly logic chips produced by 65nm process technology. It is reported that the monthly production capacity of the wafer factory is expected to be 40000 pieces. The initial goal is to produce 65 nm process technology, which will be upgraded to 40 nm process technology in the future.

Hon Hai and Vedanta, a large Indian multinational group, will invest 1.54 trillion rupees (about 133.983 billion yuan) to build a semiconductor project in Gujarat, the hometown of Indian Prime Minister Modi, for the production of chips and displays. Among them, 945 billion rupees will be used to build a new factory to produce displays, and the other 600 billion rupees will be used for chip related production, including semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and testing.

Singapore consortium IGSS Ventures will also invest 256 billion rupees (about 3.25 billion US dollars) in Tamil Nadu, India, to establish a semiconductor high-tech park, including a wafer factory. The semiconductor factory will create jobs for 1500 people, and the ecosystem of outsourcing and testing semiconductor (OSATS) facilities built in the park will provide jobs for about 25000 people.
